Samuel Gelston, a renowned wine and spirit merchant in Belfast established Gelston’s Old Irish Whiskey in 1830. In 1869 the business was bought by Harry J. Neill. Neill had made his money in the Australian Gold Rush of 1851. He went on to expand the business significantly.
